How To Get Started:

  1. Post on our FaceBook page if interested and we’ll get you set up, or….
  2. Come to our sign up event (held twice a year, once before our Spring season and once before our Fall season. Typically held around the third week of January and around the second week of July)
  3. Weekly drop-in darts at The Deuces on Taravel St. on most Saturday nights. Visit the Saturday Nights at the Deuces FaceBook page for more information. The $11 entry* includes a dollar for the mystery out pot. It is open to any and all darts players. Sign-ups start at 7:00, and the tournament starts at 7:30.
  4. If you already know what division you want to play out of, look up that division’s schedule. You can find it on our website. Show up a half hour earlier than the game starts (@7:00 pm). You can chat with the captain(s) to see if they need another team member for the current season. After Week 10, no new players can be added onto a team.
  5. Member fees are $25 a player/season and can be paid with cash, check or online on our website at sign-ups. We play Wednesday Evenings at 7:30 pm.

Teams

Teams consist of at least 4 persons. They must have a bar sponsor. There’s a list of San Francisco Bars on the website at the bottom under the Information header. Before the bar is accepted into the league, we will usually visit the bar. We look at their dart set-up to make sure there is proper lighting of the board. We also check that the board is in decent shape, etc. The sponsor will pay a one-time seasonal fee of $125, or $100 for each team over one team.

Having been a captain of many teams for a long time during my tenure with the SFDL. I’ve observed that a perfect team consists of four people. They all show up every Wednesday throughout the entire season. That being said, it rarely happens, life happens, unexpected moments. Forming a team of all part-time players is even more challenging. Each week, it feels like you are constantly managing the schedule. “OK, who can make the match this week?” As a future captain, ask your players if they are going to be part-time. This will help with “captain frustration”.

In some cases, it can be beneficial not to make-up a match sometime soon. You can opt to play with the 3 people who did show up. This is the bare least for an official match. You will have to give up a few games. There is a game or two when you have to play doubles with only one player. That player would have to “skip” the turn that they are missing a player for. Thus, the other team will be shooting back to back. We call this an Iron man leg because you are the sole player for a doubles match. Although the solo player will lose the majority of these Iron man legs, it is a great “bragging rights” moment. It happens if the Iron man wins the leg!

All being said about forming a dart team, the best teams realistically are a mix of full-timers and part-timers. Ideally, you have 6 – 8 players on your team. When “everyone” shows up on your team at once, create a rotation. This will help include all players. It’s always good, as a captain, to take your players’ feedback on their game performance. Use this feedback to place them in the game they think they can win! Not everyone likes to play ONLY cricket all season, or ONLY 301, unless they outright told you that. Be fair and your team will respect you as a captain.
